Welcome to Visit-the-World's Zakynthos section ...

Visit Zakynthos

Visit Zakynthos

Zakynthos, or Zante, is one of the loveliest of all the Greek Islands. It is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands in the clear blue Ionian Sea 15 miles off  the west coast of the Peloponnese Peninsula [Peloponnisos] of Southern
Greece.

The Greeks call it Zakynthos/Zakinthos. The other name, Zante, was
originally given to the island by ruling Venetians, who also oversaw the
planting of a vast number of olive trees on the island. The trees are still there and so is the name Zante, which is popular with many in the travel industry because it is shorter and easier to say and spell!!

The island's shape is reminiscent of a lobster's open claw. The eastern-
most  "claw" is known as the Vassilikos / Vasilikos [It's all Greek to me!!] Peninsula. This hilly corner of Zakynthos /Zante  has the most picturesque, sandy beaches on the island. They include the well-known  Mavratzis and St Nicholas/St Nikolas beaches, as well as many beautiful, secluded coves.

Olive groves dot the lower slopes of this typically Greek farming area, with pine forests higher up the mountains.

The island's capital, Zakynthos or Zante Town is about five miles up the
coast from Vasilikos village, and about 2.5 miles from the airport. It's a good shopping centre. Great for those "holiday gifts ", especially  jewellery [or even jewelry!], antiques, leather goods and designer labels!

It can get a bit hectic here in high summer with very noisy traffic. The fantastic frescos at St Dennis Church are really worth viewing.

Ferries run twice daily from ZanteTown to Killini on the mainland and, in
high season, to Kefalonia. The Flying Dolphin ferry visits the neighbouring islands of Ithaka, Poros and Lefkas.

Laganas, on the south coast, is the most popular resort on
Zante/Zakynthos, with a beautiful sandy beach five miles long. It has every holiday facility you could wish for. It attracts large numbers of young people in July and August due to the lively atmosphere. Discos and bars are plentiful.

There are endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtles on parts of the beach. They are a protected species, which bury their eggs in the sand, so these areas are closely monitored. Visitors are asked to keep clear.

Tsilivi , 4 miles north of Zante Town, is in a very pretty setting, with a lovely sandy beach. It manages to combine a traditional village atmosphere with that of a holiday resort. It is great for families and couples of all ages.

Kalamaki is a quiet, up-market resort with golden sands and wonderfully
clear, blue water. It offers a wide range of cuisine and stylish night-life. It is 3 miles from the airport and about 2.5miles east of lively Laganas.

The most famous beach of all on Zante is the very picturesque Smuggler's Cove, featured on thousands of postcards. It really is beautiful!! In fact, whether you call the island Zante or Zakynthos [or even Zakinthos!], you will be truly captured by its overall beauty!

One of the true gems of the Mediterranean region!!

Travel and tourism are one of the main recreation activities of the modern world, both in the United Kingdom and internationally. Travelers in previous times went on pilgrimage or traveled for trade and exploration. Most people would not have the opportunities of long distance travel that we have nowadays.

We can travel by foot, by car, bus, train, airplane, boat, taxi, hovercraft, motorbike, bicycle, quad-bike or whatever. We can go to pretty much anywhere we fancy. Anyone of us can use websites like this one (visit-the-world.com) to book our flights and our accommodation, even booking a car can all be done on-line in a matter of minutes.

International travel is a favourite pastime for many people. Literally millions of us fly and cruise to exotic destinations for a break and to get a new angle on the world. Some people take up to four foreign holidays a year. Whilst there are endless holidays and adventures to be enjoyed abroad there are also many wonderful sights and experiences available in the UK.

Why not take a trip of a lifetime to the destination of your choice and write an internet blog (weblog) of your travel experiences. You can also post your holiday photos on your blog and share them with friends, family and other worldwide web users. If you have a mini video camera you could make a holiday video telling the story of your travel adventures. You could put this onto a DVD and also post it online.

The world is full of variety and there is no end to the possible holdays or journeys that are available. There is a complete range of choice for every traveller. All that we have to do is choose where we want to go and what we want to do and enjoy our holiday!

Ticket sales are handled by Holiday Express (ABTA No. E8585) retail agents for ATOL holders.
